Copacabana originalmente fue un centro ceremonial y de observación astronómica precolombino destruido por los españoles, cuyas huellas quedaron en las ruinas líticas que encontramos en las afueras. En su lugar fue edificado en el siglo XVI el bellísimo Santuario de la Virgen de Copacabana. La Virgen morena esculpida en madera por un indígena del lugar. Su altar está revestido de oro y plata y las vestimentas de la pequeña imagen están llenas de valiosas joyas de la época colonial.
Lago Titikaka, a 3.900 msnm, con sus islas en las cuales la cultura Inca estableció sus más importantes centros ceremoniales, como en las Islas del Sol y la Luna.
