General Description
The Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat with an area of 12,000 km², located at 3,650 m above sea level in southwest Bolivia, in the province of Daniel Campos, department of Potosí, and is part of the Altiplano region of the Andes mountain range.
Beauty and solitude in a rugged and inhospitable landscape have never been better represented than in the Salar de Uyuni. Surrounded by mountains and volcanoes rising above 5,000 meters above sea level, the scenery is indescribable. The salt flats range in depth from 10 centimeters to 8 meters and are estimated to contain some 10 billion tons of minerals. One of the world’s largest lithium reserves is also located here.
Itinerary

We begin our adventure by visiting the famous Train Cemetery, one of Uyuni’s most photographed landmarks. Here you can walk among rusty locomotives and train cars dating back to the 19th century, witnesses to Bolivia’s mining boom.
We continue on to Colchani, a small community located on the edge of the salt flats. Here you will learn about the traditional process of salt extraction and refining, as well as explore its picturesque local market with handicrafts, textiles, and products made from salt.
We entered the Salar de Uyuni to visit the old Salt Hotel, now a museum and viewpoint. Nearby are the classic salt mounds, the “eyes of water” (natural springs), and the iconic Plaza de las Banderas del Mundo (Plaza of the Flags of the World), where you can take unique photographs.
We continue on to Incahuasi Island, a rock formation in the middle of the salt flats covered in giant cacti up to 10 meters tall. We’ll hike to its highest point, from where we’ll enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire salt flats.
We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch on the salt flats, with an incomparable setting and endless white expanses of views. Everything is ready for you to have an unforgettable experience.
In the afternoon, we stayed to witness a magical sunset over the salt flats, where the sky and earth merge in a perfect reflection. A spectacular end to an unforgettable day.
