General Description
The program includes an immersive experience visiting the region’s two most important attractions: the impressive Macaw Clay Lick in Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and the idyllic Lake Sandoval in the Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone. There are also opportunities for encounters with wildlife. This 4-day jungle tour was created for nature lovers, especially those who enjoy birdwatching and wildlife viewing.
Itinerary
DAY 1: TRANSFER TO WASAÍ TAMBOPATA LODGE:
Recepción en el aeropuerto y traslado al WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge, donde Usted recibirá nuestra bienvenida con un delicioso cocktail o jugo tropical. Embarque en bote con motor fuera de borda y traslado por aproximadamente 3 1/2 horas por el río Tambopata, hasta el WASAI Tambopata Lodge (Box lunch en la ruta). Durante el trayecto observaremos las granjas de colonos y aves de varias especies. Oportunidad de ver en el camino familias de capibaras, los roedores más grandes del mundo. Recepción, acomodamiento en el Lodge. Después de un breve descanso, realizaremos una caminata nocturna al bosque para observar y oír a insectos, murciélagos, ranas, y quizás algún encuentro ocasional con otros mamíferos nocturnos. Cena y Pernocte en el Lodge. Los diversos sonidos de la selva acompañarán nuestra primera noche en la amazonía. Noche en WASAI Tambopata Lodge (BL, C)
DAY 2: VISIT TO MACAW CLAY LICK:
We’ll wake up early (4:30 a.m.) and have a light coffee or mate before beginning our 40-minute trek upstream to the El Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick in Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. We’ll have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful natural scenery and wildlife along the banks of the Tambopata River. Upon arrival, weather permitting, we’ll witness one of the greatest wildlife spectacles: hundreds of parrots and macaws of various species descending to feed on the mud of a riverbank—an experience you’ll never forget!
Afterwards, we’ll explore the riverbank in search of animal tracks while enjoying a snack. Mid-morning, we’ll return to the lodge for breakfast and free time to relax, participate in adventure activities, or simply enjoy the facilities and amenities that Wasaí offers.
We’ll cross the river by boat (approximately 10 minutes) to enjoy the Gato Waterfalls and take a refreshing dip in a natural jacuzzi. Optionally, we’ll try our hand at fishing for some of the more than 250 species of fish that inhabit the area, or take a kayak or canoe trip on the river.
After lunch, we’ll venture into the jungle on an ethnobotanical hike along the trails of Tambopata, learning about the medicinal plants and trees of the region and observing the impressive Amazonian ecosystem, where we might see walking palms, ancient lupuna trees, snakes, and more.
At dusk, we’ll take a nighttime boat trip in search of caimans. Dinner. Overnight at WASAI Tambopata Lodge (B, L, D).
DAY 3: VISIT TO LAKE SANDOVAL:
After breakfast, we’ll begin our return journey along the Tambopata River to the Wasai Maldonado Ecolodge, where we’ll leave our luggage, have lunch, and rest briefly. Then, we’ll take a 30-minute boat ride to Lake Sandoval. We’ll hike 3 km to the lake’s shores, where we’ll board a canoe for a paddle tour, enjoying the beautiful scenery and observing the lake’s wildlife, such as kingfishers, herons, monkeys, and exotic birds. With a bit of luck, we might even spot the family of giant river otters that inhabit the lake.
We’ll observe the transition from day to night, as the sounds of birds and insects gradually give way to the sounds of the night. Afterward, we’ll begin our return journey to the Madre de Dios River and Puerto Maldonado. After dinner, you can relax or explore the city on foot or by bicycle. The rest of the evening is free to enjoy the nightlife of this welcoming city. Overnight at WASAI Maldonado Ecolodge (B, L, D)
