General Description
Pallay Punchu is a new rainbow mountain in Cusco, renowned for its pink, purple, green, ochre, and white hues, the result of mineral oxidation and reminiscent of the designs on Andean ponchos. This destination is perfect for trekking enthusiasts seeking unique landscapes that showcase the geological richness of the Peruvian Andes. Located in the district of Layo, province of Canas, about 190 km from Cusco, it reaches an altitude of 4,791 meters above sea level. Its cold and windy climate requires proper acclimatization before the hike. It’s an ideal option for an authentic and unique adventure.
Itinerary
Cusco - Cusipata – Layo - Montaña Pallay Puncho - Raqchi - Cusco.
📍 Cusco (Hotel)
Pick-up between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. depending on the hotel’s location.
📍 Cusipata
1.5-hour journey to enjoy a nutritious breakfast before continuing.
📍 Andean Valley – Road to Sicuani
A journey through a valley with crops and picturesque villages. Then you pass through Sicuani and take the route towards Espinar and Arequipa.
📍 Languilayo Lagoon
Beautiful tour along the lagoon, with panoramic views, Andean biodiversity and fish farming areas.
📍 Langui and Layo Villages
Brief stop in Layo, last chance to buy water, snacks or fruit before the climb.
📍 Ascent by mobility
Climb up a narrow, winding road to the parking lot, with views of mountains with unique pigmentations.
📍 Start of the hike
1.5 hour hike to the Pallay Puncho viewpoint, at a slow pace.
📍 Pallay Puncho Viewpoint
Views of the Apu T’akllo Apacheta mountain, famous for its natural colors resembling an Andean poncho, and panoramas of the Cusco highlands and the Andes mountain range.
📍 Return to the parking lot.
Descent to take the return transport.
📍Lunch (Sicuani or Cusipata)
Stop to enjoy a buffet lunch with Andean ingredients
📍 Raqchi Archaeological Site
Visit to the Temple of Wiraqocha, one of the most important of the Inca Empire.
📍 Cusco (Arrival)
Return to the city, with an approximate arrival time of 7:00 PM.
