Itinerary
DAY 1: CUSCO – PAUCARTAMBO - BOSQUE NUBOSO - PILCOPATA
Saldremos de Cusco muy temprano en la mañana en uno de nuestros vehículos. Recorreremos interesantes valles entre la Cordillera de los Andes y pintorescas comunidades campestres. Visitaremos tumbas pre-incas de la cultura Lupaca conocida como Ninamarca y más tarde nos detendremos en Paucartambo, un hermoso pueblo colonial, y visitaremos el interesante museo del pueblo. En el camino, almorzaremos en el bosque nuboso. Continuaremos nuestro descenso a través del bosque nuboso, una zona rica en especies endémicas, como el Oso de Anteojos y el Gallito de las Rocas, el ave nacional peruana que realiza un ritual de cortejo único. También podremos ver orquídeas, bromelias, helechos, etc. Continuaremos observando la espectacular naturaleza a lo largo de nuestro viaje hasta llegar a nuestro albergue, en la localidad de Pilcopata, donde pasaremos nuestra primera noche, despues tendra tiempo para vistar la ciudad.
DAY 2: PILCOPATA - MANU LODGE
After breakfast, we’ll take a hike where we can observe the forest’s wildlife, such as monkeys and birds. Then, we’ll visit a coca plantation and a wildlife rescue center. Afterward, we’ll travel to Puerto Atalaya, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at 500 meters above sea level. There, we’ll begin our boat descent to observe the enormous diversity of bird species, such as herons, vultures, cormorants, and more, until we reach Manu Lodge. There, we’ll swim in the river and have lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll visit a swamp where we can observe birds like toucans, woodpeckers, macaws, and others. In the evening, before dinner, we’ll go out to observe the Manu wildlife, which is most active at night. We’ll spend the night at the lodge.
DAY 3: LODGE - LAGUNA MACHUWASI - LODGE
Very early in the morning, we’ll board our boat and head to the macaw clay lick, a wall along the riverbank where different species of parrots gather every morning, including the blue-headed parrot, the white-eyed parakeet, and the chestnut-fronted macaw, among others. Here they eat the clay, which is rich in minerals and helps them digest food and eliminate toxins from their bodies. Afterward, we’ll return to our lodge for a delicious breakfast. Following breakfast, we’ll take a two-hour hike through the forest. We’ll return to the lodge for lunch and then relax at the lodge or take a dip in the river. After lunch, you’ll also have the option to go ziplining. In the afternoon, we’ll visit Lake Machuwasi, where we’ll explore by raft, observing birds like the prehistoric hoatzin and, with luck, other animals such as monkeys and capybaras. Then we’ll take a night hike through the forest to look for insects and amphibians. After the night hike, we will have dinner and spend the night at Manu Lodge.
DAY 4: LODGE - PUERTO ATALAYA - CUSCO
Early in the morning, we’ll embark on an exciting 20-minute boat trip down the picturesque creek. During this fascinating journey, we’ll have the opportunity to witness a unique natural spectacle: parrots visiting to lick clay, a behavior that allows them to obtain essential minerals for their diet. We’ll admire various parrot species, such as green parrots, blue-headed parrots (Pionus menstrus), mealy parrots (Amazona farinosa), and chestnut-fronted macaws (Ara severa), among others, in their natural habitat, offering us an unforgettable display of color and sound.
After this enriching experience, we’ll return to the lodge where a hearty breakfast will be waiting for us. Afterward, we’ll prepare to pack up our memories and the experiences we’ve had in this magical rainforest.
Once we have completed our preparations, we will say goodbye to the lodge and head to the port of Atalaya aboard the boat. There, our bus will be waiting to take us back to the city of Cusco, bringing our jungle adventure to a close with a feeling of gratitude and awe for the beauty and diversity of nature that we have been privileged to explore.
