The Classic 4-day Inca Trail is the most famous trekking route to Machu Picchu. Over 43 km, you’ll visit archaeological sites such as Patallacta, Runkuracay, Sayacmarca, and Wiñayhuayna, and cross two mountain passes over 4,000 m (13,123 ft) above sea level before reaching the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.

Remember to check the availability of the Inca Trail in advance, as places are limited and sell out quickly.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Cusco – Km 82 – Wayllabamba

The tour begins early with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. We will travel to kilometer 82, the official starting point of the Inca Trail, where we will cross the Urubamba River and visit the archaeological complex of Patallacta (Llactapata). After lunch in Miskay, we will continue along the Inca Trail to our campsite at Wayllabamba, located at 3,000 meters above sea level (9,842 feet), for the night.

This is the most challenging day of the trek. We will ascend to the Warmiwañuska Pass at 4,200 meters (13,779 feet), the highest point of the route, where we will pause to enjoy the views. Then we will descend to the campsite at Pacaymayo, one of the coldest on the classic Inca Trail, located at 3,600 meters (12,000 feet).

After breakfast, we’ll ascend to the second pass: Abra de Runkuracay at 4,000 meters above sea level (13,123 feet), and visit its archaeological site. Then we’ll head towards the archaeological site of Sayacmarca. After lunch, we’ll arrive at Puyupatamarca, “the city among the clouds,” and descend to Wiñayhuayna with its terraces and views of the high jungle; this will be our campsite for the night on the third day of the Inca Trail.

On the last day, after breakfast, we will depart very early for the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where we will have panoramic views of Machu Picchu at sunrise. We will enter via Circuit 1 – Panoramic Route, currently the only authorized route for those arriving via the Inca Trail.
